Author Guidelines

VII was founded to meet the need for discussion and balanced assessment of the lives and works of Owen Barfield, G.K. Chesterton, C.S. Lewis, George MacDonald, Dorothy L. Sayers, J.R.R. Tolkien, and Charles Williams. This peer-reviewed journal provides both the general and specialized reader with a reliable source of critical studies on these authors', including their unpublished writings.

Articles

VII's editorial staff and advisors seek articles that present original scholarship with analytical rigor and clarity of expression. VII has a history of interdisciplinarity. Literature, philosophy, theology, and history are commonly explored subjects, but submissions investigating topics in any discipline are welcome.

Some of the qualities sought by the editors and advisory board when evaluating submissions include a focused thesis, convincing support of the thesis, clarity of style, creative and thorough analysis, and interaction with and relevance to seminal research and dialogue in the pertinent fields of scholarship. Unsolicited articles are evaluated through blind review.

VII Author Agreement Overview

We require authors to grant VII a worldwide exclusive license to publish their articles. Authors, however, retain the copyright to their articles and the intellectual content therein.

Normally, VII accepts only submissions that have not been previously published, and are not under consideration by other journals. However, we will accept submissions that have been previously posted on preprint servers, on the condition that the author informs the journal via cover letter of the locations where the article has been posted and (if known) how many individuals have viewed the article. No additional versions of the manuscript may be posted to preprint servers at any time after initial submission to VII.

We reserve the right to deem the posting of an article on a preprint server to count as “prior publication”—depending on certain factors.

Upon acceptance for publication in VII, the author agrees to remove any previous or current preprint versions from online. In addition, we restrict the sharing of any previous and current versions of the article once it has been accepted. See the publication agreement for more details.

Authors may not publish the Version of Record (VOR) in another publication or format within 24 months of publication in VII (e.g., book chapter, etc). All re-publications of the article require written permissions and citation from VII.

Permission to Reprint

Permission to photocopy is granted by the Marion E. Wade Center and the authors whose articles or book reviews appear in VII to individuals for the purpose of internal or personal use only. Internal and personal use does not extend to other kinds of copying, such as republication in any form, copying for general distribution, for advertising or promotional purposes, for compiling new collective works, or for resale. For uses beyond personal or internal use, permission must be obtained from the Marion E. Wade Center.
