Author Biography

  • David Llewellyn Dodds, Independent Scholar

David Llewellyn Dodds studied Old and Middle English under Tolkien’s students —and later colleagues—Bruce Mitchell and Douglas Gray, at Oxford, where he was supervised on Charles Williams by Humphrey Carpenter and Anne Ridler, and also served as president of the C.S. Lewis Society and was interviewer for the Wade Center Oral History Project. While looking after The Kilns, Dodds edited the Charles Williams volume in Boydell & Brewer’s Arthurian Poets series (Arthurian Studies XXIV); he later added the John Masefield volume (Arthurian Studies XXXII). He has published various papers and reviews in the Charles Williams Society Quarterly, the Inklings Jahrbuch, Mythlore, Lembas, Beyond Bree, VII, and the volumes “Scholarship and Fantasy: The Tolkien Phenomenon,” Anglicana Turkuensia, No. 12 (1993), Lembas-Extra (1993-94; 2016; 2022; 2024), and The Rhetoric of Vision: Essays on Charles Williams (1996). He contributed an essay to Christopher Tompkins’s new edition of Arthur Machen’s The Terror (Darkly Bright Press, 2024). He is currently working on editions of Williams’s unpublished Arthurian prose and poetry.
