Coleridge, Tolkien, and the Power of Allusion in "Leaf by Niggle"
Abstract
Doug Jackson reads literary allusion backwards and forwards through time, linking J.R.R. Tolkien’s “Leaf by Niggle” and “Mythopoeia” with Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “The Rime of the Ancient Mariner” through imagery. In conversation with numerous scholars, particularly Malcolm Guite, Jackson shows how the connection between these works enhances and illuminates new meaning in the writing of both Tolkien the fairytale-teller and Coleridge the Romantic.
